Mental Health and Mental Illness can best be understood as a continuum, on which all people exist. Sometimes we are more mentally healthy, and at other times less so. We move up and down on the continuum throughout our lives, affected by many factors. Grief, loss, disappointment, stress and trauma impact us, as does our physical health, biology and genetics.
About one out of every six people experience serious problems with mental health at one time during his or her life. These problems range from milder, seasonal depressions, to phobias, anxiety disorders, or post-traumatic stress, or to more severe or life-long disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or chronic depression.
We have 3 programs located in the Downtown Duluth area and a fourth location located in Lakeside Duluth.
Services provided through AHFC are primarily paid for through Minnesota Medical Assistance and state and county funds. AHFC also accepts private pay in some cases.
IRTS provides intensive therapeutic services, including individual and group therapy, medication management, life skills training, and recreational activities, all aimed at mental health stabilization.
Adults with a mental health diagnosis who need more support than outpatient services can provide are eligible. An assessment will determine if IRTS is appropriate.
The stay depends on treatment progress and individual needs. Some clients may require a few weeks, while others need a few months. The treatment plan is flexible and tailored.
The primary goal is to stabilize mental health conditions, help clients develop coping skills, and provide a supportive environment for transitioning back to community living.
We offer various therapeutic modalities, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, life skills training, and recreation activities to build social and wellness skills.
We work with each client on an aftercare plan to ensure continued support in the community. This may include referrals to outpatient therapy, housing support, or other resources.
